September 28, 2007 Number of Prisoner Reaches Record High
The number of prisoners held in England and Wales has just
reached a new peak today. There are now 81,133 prisoners in jails in England and
Wales, according to new figures released by the
prison service. This includes 331
prisoners who are currently being held in police cells.
The previous peak was 81,040 prisoners; this was in June,
2007.
