Substance Misuse: UK

Addaction is a UK charity working in the field of drug and alcohol treatment. It has over 50 projects within communities and prisons.

Alcohol Concern is a national agency working to reduce the incidence and costs of alcohol-related harm and to improve services for people with alcohol-related problems. They provide information on the wide range of public policy issues affected by alcohol, including crime.

The Centre for Drug Misuse Research conducts policy relevant research on drug misuse within Scotland.

The Daily Dose site provides links to news and reports concerning drug and alcohol misuse (abuse), and drug addiction. It is updated regulalrly links to a wide range of information providers. There is also a Weekly Dose section and a comprehensive archives section.

The drinkanddrugs.net site is provided by the Federation of Drug & Alcohol Professionals and is aimed at practitioners working with clients with drug and alcohol problems, as well as those providing substance misuse education and prevention services.

Drug Treatment and Testing Orders (DTTOs) are community sentences designed to help problematic drug users address their problem via intensive programmes of treatment and testing. A DTTO requires convicted offenders to participate in treatment, and undertake regular testing for drug use.

DrugScope is an independent centre of expertise on drugs. It aims to inform policy development and reduce drug-related risk.

The Home Office Drugs Strategy addresses the delivery of the National Drugs Strategy's aims through the work of drug action teams.

The Mentor Foundation is an international non-governmental, non-profit organisation focused on the prevention of drug misuse and the promotion of young people's health. Mentor seeks to identify, support and share information on effective practice that will prevent and protect young people from the harm that drugs can cause.

The National Treatment Agency for Substance Misuse (NTA)  aims to increase the availability, capacity and effectiveness of treatment for drug misuse in England. This site includes details of the NTA's work programme, as well as publications and guidance for those in the drug treatment sector. The NTA is not a drug treatment service.

Release aims to promote understanding of drug-related issues and support an often marginalised section of society. They offer a range of specialist services concerning drugs and the law, including the Legal Helpline and the Heroin Helpline. They provide free, professional, non-judgmental and confidential advice to drug users, their families, friends, and statutory and voluntary agencies.

Talk to Frank is a UK government website aimed at young people and their parents, under the slogan "Drugs are illegal, talking about them isn't". More useful for practitioners than academics.

Turning Point is a leading UK social care charity working in the areas of drug and alcohol misuse, mental health and learning disability.

Urban 75's drug information site neither condemns nor condones drug use. The resource is intended for people to access the facts and make their own, informed decisions. Good site for practitioners.

Substance Misuse: International

The Canadian Harm Reduction Network is a forum for individuals and organizations across Canada dedicated to reducing the social, health and economic harms associated with drugs and drug policies.  

The Cocaine and Federal Sentencing Policy site has offers a downloadable Special Report to the Congress United States Sentencing Commission. It includes information on cocaine and its links with crime.

The American Drug War Facts site offers information on drugs with full citations to aid further research, as well a wealth of usual material available for download.

The National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) site has a wealth of information. NIDA supports over 85 percent of the world's research on the health aspects of drug abuse and addiction.

The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) is a global leader in addressing illicit drugs and international crime. UNODC implements its operational priorities through an integrated approach to counter drugs, crime and terrorism. This site offers some useful statistics.
